About
Mary F. Boardman, LCSW
Experience
I grew up at the intersection of many different faith traditions, giving me deep familiarity with diverse spiritual practices and beliefs. I am comfortable and experienced supporting interfaith perspectives, category-defying spiritual beliefs, and atheism alike. I have worked extensively with people of faith—both those who find their faith supportive and affirming, and those healing from religious and spiritual trauma.
My family and community of origin are unusually diverse, encompassing people of many different cultures, races, classes, religions, gender identities, and sexual orientations. This experience has taught me humility and the understanding that no single category can fully capture an individual's beliefs and lived experience. I welcome questions, admit when I don't know or understand something, and commit to continuing learning throughout my practice. I support everyone's right to self-determination and I am LGBTQ+ affirming.
As a person with lived experience of trauma, I am an active and enthusiastic supporter of the Recovery and Peer Support movements in Philadelphia. My first formal role in mental health was with Mental Health Partnerships (formerly Mental Health Association of SEPA), a pioneer in both the Recovery Movement and community-based mental health. The core values of these movements—that people can and do recover from mental health challenges, and that each person has the right to be the final arbiter of their care decisions—continue to inform my work today.
Clients
Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with clients from around the world and across the lifespan, from children as young as five to adults with 60+ years of life experience. My clients have included people of great privilege as well as those who have experienced homelessness, survived state-sponsored torture, and refugees and asylees who are rebuilding their lives in the wake of trauma and persecution.
Approach
I take a strengths-based, trauma-informed, psychodynamic, relational approach to therapy. I strongly believe that the work of therapy is inherently collaborative. You are the expert on your own life; I bring tools, and perspective. I draw from many modalities including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Solution Focused Therapy (SFT), and Narrative Therapy. I have received formal training in Animal Assisted Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
Together, we'll explore where you are, where you might want to be, and how my experience and your strengths can work together to help you get there.
Education & Credentials
I received my BA from the University of Pennsylvania and my MSS from Bryn Mawr College's Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research. I am licensed for clinical practice in Pennsylvania.
